His eyes widen and springs to his feet…
but you can see it pains him after sitting for so long in the same position. “So someone did find them!”
“I’ve been looking for you ever since! I thought maybe- you’d know a way out of here.” It only dawns on you now how silly it was to place your hope on finding someone like you in this place, because if they knew how to get out, they already would have. He sees the hope leave your eyes, and starts shifting with embarrassment.
“Well, well, I’m close… come look here!” he points to the black triangular object that was sitting in front of him.
“It’s helped me track all of my attempts you see. I have been working tirelessly, for weeks. Using these scraps, I have built ladders up to the sky, and sent out a signal into the abyss…”
“but nothing has worked.”
Now stopping his grandiose gestures, he hangs his head. “No.” and sits back down, facing away from his black box.
“Can I look at what you’ve tried?”
He points over to his papers, strewn all over the ground and you start to read. The papers are far from few, and it does seem to you like he has tried everything. The residues of the attempts are lying around to prove it. He had tried marking his path through the void, and he has tried going back up into the sky past the letters. And as you read through his attempts, he just sits there looking off into nothing. “Where did you say you find those scrolls?” he says behind you.
“Um well I assume in the same place where you left it… buried out in the void somewhere.”
“Buried?”
“Yes, stuck into the ground.”
“I didn’t stick it into the ground, I launched it with a canon, I was trying to send it into this sky… if you could call this such a thing.”
Silence ensued again as you kept reading, trying to find another way. A few minutes passed before he brought it up again.
“Wait what exactly do you mean buried?”
